E-BIKES

Class 1 e-Bikes & Class 2 e-bikes with disabled throttles can be used on the trail. Details below:

Lookout Associates operates under a Special Use Permit through the USDA Forest Service (FS). Within our permit we are authorized to operate Class 1 e-bikes. The FS definition of a Class 1 e-bike is that the e-bike is equipped with a motor that provides assistance ONLY when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the e-bike reaches the speed of 20 mph.

Class 2 e-bikes are allowed within the Special Permit area so long as the e-bike throttle has been disabled for the entire trail, and checked by Hiawatha Trail staff to fit within the FS definition of a Class 1 e-bike.

Class 3 e-bikes are prohibited at all times.

All E-Bikes will be charged an additional $15. Because they are heavier and many do not fit well in our shuttle racks forcing us to make other arrangements to accomodate your bike.

For any person using an e-bike on the trail there will be an additional $15 cost to transport e-bikes and other oversized or heavier e-bikes on our shuttles. This fee will be charged when feasable in advance or when we are not made aware of your choice to use and e-bike on the day/night you choose to ride if using our shuttle. You always have the choice to ride your e-bike uphill to avoid paying the additional fee for us to transport an e-bike.
